Making a positive change – being healthy

So, much like many men that are heading into their 40’s (not yet, but soon) it has been brought to my attention that I am not 18 years of age anymore.  Actually, this was brought to my attention some time ago by my lovely wife, but you know what it’s like in a marriage – you just don’t listen!

Anyway, had a blood test, doctor called me up all concerned – “I need you to come in for a non-urgent appointment, as soon as you can”.  Ok, so?  Apparently my numbers are not all they should be – I mean, they’re impressive numbers but apparently I should have been going for the LOW score, not the high one.  Whoops.  Short version, liver’s not working properly, sugar is too high, cholesterol is starting to get its wings.  “Can I print that up so I can show my wife please” I hear myself saying – so, it’s decided.  I’m not hiding this time.  Since averaging a hatted restaurant every week for the past few months (and a few too many drinks) doesn’t appear to be the pathway to health, I’m going to have to find an alternative strategy.

Day one, no coffee, no sugar, multi vitamins, lots of weird pills that are supposed to make me healthy.  Green tea, lots of water, high fibre, no meat.  Two weeks in, and I’m starting to crave avocado and gluten free bread, so things are looking up.  Tonight, I even managed to get on my virtual bike trainer, for the first time in about 2 years.

Healthy lunch

My standard healthy lunch

This photo is what my standard lunch is starting to look like.  Look at the colours, the textures – you can just feel the health dripping off it like nice, warm duck fat.  Most remarkable for this somewhat unhealthy financial planner is that my team, the guys that support me day in and day out, are a bunch of health nuts.  We have paleo snacks, almond milk, wholefoods everything in the office – it’s such a great place to be while trying to get healthy.  I’m hoping to post some photos of some interesting food on here, so watch this space 🙂
